Commonplace book containing literary extracts and notes on theological, political andother subjects, 1824

The two volumes which comprise this collection provide a personal miscellany of manuscript notestranscribed from a variety of sources. These are not always identified. They include, for instance,'The Gentleman's Magazine'. The subject matter is varied. Literary items include poems and epigrams.Events are described, and opinions associated with writers, politicians and theologians. Placesmentioned range from the Moon and Mexico to Stratford-upon-Avon; occasional items include, forexample, the nutritional value of different foods. Longer passages include 'Outline of a rationalsystem of education'; 'Definition of the term [political] party'; a description of a number of townsin Switzerland and Germany; and observations on children and families.

There are no obvious clues as to the compiler of the extracts. The first volume was started inApril 1824 and the second is dated October 1824.

The identity of the compiler of the scrapbooks in this collection is unknown.

No archival arrangement has been necessary.
