At the general election of 1 May 1997, 31,286,284 votes were cast, with aturn-out of 71.4 per cent (the lowest since the war).
The Labour Party won 418 seats with 43.2 per cent of votes cast (271 with 34.4 per cent in1992); the Conservative Party 165 with 30.7 per cent (336 with 41.9 per cent); the LiberalDemocratic Party 46 with 16.8 per cent (20 with 17.8 per cent); ind 1 (nil); 1 seat went tothe Speaker. Regional parties (Scotland): the Scottish National Party gained6 seats (3 in 1992); (Wales): Plaid Cymru 4 (4); (Northern Ireland): theUlster Unionist Party 10 (9); the Democratic Unionist Party 2 (3); the Socialand Democratic Labour Party 3 (4); Sinn Fin 2 (nil); United Kingdom Unionist1 (replaced the Popular Unionist Party, 1 seat in 1992). Labour gained 146seats and lost 1; the Conservatives gained no seats and lost 178; the LiberalDemocrats gained 30 seats and lost 2.
