Sierra Leone: Wallace album

Scope and Content

A collection of photographs relating to a visit to Sierra Leone. All photographs measure 83 x 110 mm, 48 are contained in an album, the remainder are loose. They were presumably taken by Alexander Moultrie Wallace, whose card is stuck inside the front cover with 'Trixie from Alec with much love and wishing her many happy returns of the day 2/May/13' written on it. Above the card is written 'B.M.P.C. from A.M.W. 2/May/13'. The caption to the first photograph indicates Wallace's purpose in going to Sierra Leone, but nothing more has been discovered about him. Dr Christopher Fyfe comments: 'he seems (assuming that the photographs are arranged in chronological order) to have gone first to the Sherbro, then inland, and back to Freetown by train'. Part of the journey was clearly by boat (e.g. 20, 23, 26). Most photographs are captioned (in black ink on a dark brown background); notes on those that are not, and other additional information, are given in brackets.
