Administrative / Biographical History

The Mexborough and Swinton Tramways Company began business after the Mexborough and Swinton Tramways Acts and Orders were passed between 1902 and 1947. They provided the Urban Districts of Rawmarsh, Swinton, Mexborough, Conisbrough and part of Wath-upon-Dearne with electronic trolley vehicle services. In 1929, the company changed its name to the Mexborough and Swinton Traction Company and became a limited company in 1953. By 1959 the provision of trolley vehicles, however, was not economically viable and the company chose to replace them with motor omnibuses.
