This postcard was gifted to Doncaster Archives by Mrs McCann, who had it in her possession. Baxter Gate is a comparatively short street in Doncaster and until the end of the 14th century was known by the latin name 'Vicus Pistorum', the street of the bakers. The present day name was adopted during the 18th century. It was an important street commercially, being one of the main approaches to the market area. The widening of it in 1894 partly alleviated the congested traffic and by the time the first trolley buses had appeared, many alterations had taken place. These included the new clock corner building and the banking premises on the opposite corner.
