Arnold William Warrington Lea, Certificates

Certificates and correspondence relating to Arnold William Warrington Lea, surgeon. The collection contains a letter (dated 1908) from the University of London confirming that Lea passed his doctor of medicine degree in 1892 and three certificates:

1. Certificate from the Royal College of Surgeons of England, qualifying Lea to practice surgery and become a member of the college, August 1889

2. Certificate from the Royal College of Surgeons of England, qualifying Lea to become a fellow of the college, May-July 1892

3. Certificate from the Royal College of Physicians of London, qualifying Lea to practice medicine, surgery and midwifery, 25 July 1889

Arnold William Warrington Lea was born in 1868 and was educated at Parkhurst School in Buxton, and at Owens College, Manchester. He married Lilias Thompson McTaggart in 1913.

Lea joined the staff of the Northern Hospital for Women and Children in Manchester in 1897 having qualified as a doctor from the University of London in 1892. Lea’s contributions to the medical literature included numerous articles to medical journals, and he was involved in the foundation of the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Lea wrote the book ‘Puerperal Infection’ (1910) and as elected President of the North of England Obstetrical Society in 1912.
