The Cotton Queen pageant was a Beauty Pageant for girls from Northern cotton mill towns. There would be a finalist from each of the cotton towns and then the overall queen would be judged. The girls wore long gowns and held cards with the names of their towns on; Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Leeds and so on. Miss Knowles was from Lancashire.
