Administrative / Biographical History
The Women's Institute Movement in Britain started in 1915. The first WI in Britain was formed under the auspices of the Agricultural Organisation Society. Individual Institutes are self-governing and are grouped into county federations that make up The National Federation of Women's Institutes. Today, the WI encourages women to participate in community life, cultural projects and public campaigns. Llanfachreth Womens' Institute, Llanfachreth, Merionethshire, has been active since 1946.
