Administrative / Biographical History

Doncaster Metropolitan Institute of Higher Education (DMIHE) was established in 1976 through the amalgamation of four educational institutions. These were Doncaster College of Education at High Melton, inherited from the former Doncaster County Borough, the Doncaster College of Art, the Doncaster College of Technology and the Schofield Technical College at Mexborough. (Scawsby College inherited from the former West Riding of Yorkshire County Council was closed in 1976.) The archives of all these institutions are deposited at Doncaster Archives. In 1977, the Secretary of State for Education announced that the training of teachers was to be extensively re-organised and that consequently that teacher-training in a number of institutions, including DMIHE was to be bought to an end by 1981.

The Institute ceased to be controlled by the local authority in 1993 as a result of the provisions for further and higher education contained in an Act of Parliament of the previous year.
