There is a continuation of the clinical cases seen in Edinburgh under Dr Gregory and Dr Cullen on pp.1-36, but these constitute only a small portion of the manuscript. These cases are preceded by an index which list a total of 7 female patients, namely Marianne Smith (17), Isabel Stevens (16), Janet Finlayson (36), Helen McKay (28), Margaret Wallace (18), Margaret Alexander (19), and Isabel Strugmel (21). Some of the symptoms and conditions described for these seven patients include skin eruptions, violent fit of anger, loss of speech and motion on one side, headache, spasms, dyspnoea, shocking pains through all body, obstruction of menses, cough, thirst, loss of appetite.
The rest of the volume, from p.47 onwards records the patients and practice of Dobson following the completion of his studies in Edinburgh and his return to Lancashire in 1771. In this section all the patient names are written in Greek with any subsequent description of their condition recorded in Latin. On pp.47-50 can be found full descriptions of the cases of two male patients seen by Dobson in September 1771 and then pp.51-86 are dedicated to births he attended between September 1771 and February 1776. There are 147 labours listed in total in varying degrees of detail depending on the nature of the labour but in all instances the name of the mother and her home town are given. In cases where the same woman is seen more than once in this period reference is made to the page number of the earlier entry.
From p.145 up to the end of the manuscript and running on to the inside of the back cover is a list of patients seen by Dobson, including labours, between 1771 and 1776 giving the date, patient name, home town, brief reference to their complaint, and the amount charged for his services.
The volume bears the bookplate of the Radford Library, Saint Mary's Hospital, Manchester, which also indicates that it was allocated the reference number Q119 viz. their 1877 catalogue. The volume has since been referenced J6 D48 as part of an alternative system and has the original pagination pp.1-175.
