Notes of Edmund Lyon

A collection of lectures notes and essays from Lyon's time as a medical student which have subsequently been acquired by Crompton. The lecture notes originate from his studies in Edinburgh but the origins of the essays are not immediately evident.

Edmund Lyon was born in Prestwich, Lancashire in 1790. He began his medical education as a student to the Southwell-based surgeon Benjamin Hutchinson before heading to London, where he became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons. He then went to Edinburgh where he received his MD in 1815. Settling in Manchester he was appointed physician to the Manchester Royal Infirmary in 1817 and also established a general practice. Lyon resigned his position at the Infirmary in 1841 and was elected consulting physician to the charities by the Board. Ill-health saw him retire from practice in 1851 and instead he committed himself to the organisational work of Manchester Royal Infirmary, Manchester Royal Institution, and Henshaw's Blind Asylum. Lyon died on 17 December 1862 at which time he was serving as president of the Royal Institution.
