Administrative / Biographical History

This school was formally opened in 1929 as Armthorpe Council School Senior Mixed Department with 297 pupils (see SR46/1/1 first log book entry). In 1938 the senior boys' and girls' departments were split and this school opened on 22 August of that year as Armthorpe Council School Senior Boys' Department. A new school was built for the senior girls on Mere Lane. After the 1944 Education Act this school became a secondary modern boys' school until it closed in July 1962. After this date, the boys' and girls' schools were merged to form Armthorpe Secondary Modern Mixed School (see SR52). A punishment book used by both the secondary modern boys' and the mixed schools is catalogued under reference SR52/2/1.
