Pedigree and Grant of Arms of Charles Dauntesey Langley Greenhalgh

The material comprises two items: a grant of arms presented in 1907 to Charles Dauntesey Langley Greenhalgh (1856-1942), lord of the manor of Mellor in Derbyshire (English MS 1341a); and a finely-bound calligraphic volume of pedigrees recording the ancestry of Charles Dauntesey Langley Greenhalgh, originally compiled around 1910 and updated in c.1965 (English MS 1341b).

According to the volume of pedigrees, Charles Dauntesey Langley Greenhalgh, lord of the manor of Mellor in Derbyshire, was born on 29 November 1856, the son of Edmund Dauntesey Langley Greenhalgh (1831-1870) of Pendlebury, Lancashire, and his wife Martha, daughter of Thomas Robinson of Pendleton. Charles was the great great great great grandson of John Greenhalgh of Salford, Lancashire (who died 2 May 1813) and his wife Mary, daughter of John Dauntesey of Salford (1728-1806). Charles married Hannah, daughter of William Reynolds of Bridgenorth, Shropshire, on 19 August 1880 at Walton Breck church, Lancashire. They had three sons and three daughters, including Maud Kemp Greenhalgh (1889-1991) who as Mrs Mabel Kemp Dunn donated the two items to the Library. Charles Dauntesey Langley Greenhalgh died on 3 December 1942 at Southport, Lancashire (now Merseyside) and was buried at St John the Evangelist, Pendleton.

The items were donated to the Library by Mrs Mabel Kemp Dunn of Birkdale, Southport, Merseyside, daughter of Charles Dauntesey Langley Greenhalgh, in November 1981.

The volume of pedigrees is believed to have been commissioned and owned by Charles Dauntesey Langley Greenhalgh. Along with the grant of arms, it passed by descent to his daughter Mrs Mabel Kemp Dunn (1889-1991) née Greenhalgh, of Birkdale, Southport, Merseyside, who presented it to the Library.
