The papers comprise minute books of general meeting and committee meetings of the Society, minutes of the Chemical Colloquium, copies of the Society's magazine, published during the 1930s, syllabuses of lectures and events, administrative papers of the Society's officers and ephemera relating to Society social events.

Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The Chemical Society was established in October 1877, and held its inaugural meeting on 21 November 1877. It is one of the University's oldest societies. The Society's main function was to provide lectures on chemical subjects to departmental members. Both staff and students belonged to the Society; staff usually occupied honorary roles as presidents and vice-presidents, while the students administered the Society through a committee. In later years the Committee appears to have been run jointly by staff and student members. Students had their own colloquium at which papers could be given to an audience of peers. The Colloquium enjoyed close relations with the Society.
