Administrative / Biographical History
The school on Dolcliffe Road in Mexborough was originally a church school, founded as the Mexborough Congregationalist School. It was taken over by the Mexborough School Board (set up in 1875) with effect from 13 November 1884 and was renamed the Central Board School. It retained this name until the abolition of school boards in 1904. This school was provided by the West Riding County Council as the Dolcliffe Road Central Council School. It was [originally built in 1884 and] extended around the turn of the century [see item SR147/14 below]. The Senior Department referred to in the first admission register may be the Upper Standard or Higher Elementary School that the Mexborough School Board was planning in 1900 [see SB11/2]. The school appears to have become, like Adwick Road School, a Senior Mixed Department, in 1933.
In April 1963, it amalgamated with the Adwick Road School to form the Mexborough Secondary School, which subsequently amalgamated with Mexborough Grammar School.
