Administrative / Biographical History

The Doncaster National Schools were founded in 1816 and are shown in West Laithe Gate on the 1854 edition Ordnance Survey map (scale 6 inches : 1 mile). The surviving records of Doncaster National (CE) Boys School later called Doncaster Parish Church Boys School have been included in this catalogue because the boys school log book was also used for the Junior Mixed school after September 1930 (item SR15/1/2). The records of the infants, girls and mixed departments of the Doncaster National Schools have been catalogued as separate institutions under references SR14, SR16 and SR18 respectively. Other records of the Doncaster National Schools including managers minutes dating from 1815–1953 are catalogued under the reference P1/8 - the records of Doncaster, St George. In 1904 boys who had attended Doncaster National Mixed School (SR18) were admitted to the boys school as the mixed department was closed. The boys department closed in 1930 and the school became Doncaster Parish Junior Mixed School. In June 1943 the infants department closed and pupils transferred to this school which then became Doncaster Parish Church Junior Mixed and Infants (JMI) School. In 1953 St Georges (Controlled) CE School was opened in new premises on Clay Lane for the infants from the Parish Church School. As a result of this the school was renamed Greyfriars Junior Mixed School and then Greyfriars County Primary School. The school closed in 1957 as a result of falling numbers of pupils caused by depopulation of the catchment area.
