Administrative / Biographical History
A pawnbroker's had been established in Llanelli by Edwin Dutton in 1879. It was taken over in 1883 by Robert Wehrle (died 1910), originally from Germany. His sons, Albin (died 1954) and Robert (died 1961), took over the business, followed by his grandson, who retained the name A. and R. Wehrle adopted by his father and uncle. From about 1925, the pawnbroking side of the business declined and the sale of men's workwear became increasingly important.
