Calvert also made efforts to improve sanitary practices in the British Naval Fleet through the adoption of the use of his carbolic soap and other products. These two items of correspondence also make reference to rival products and some of the difficulties he faced. The sanitary conditions and subsequent effect on the health and wellbeing of individuals in the navy and the army had long been of concern.
