DUNSCROFT, ABBEY CHURCH OF ENGLAND MIDDLE SCHOOL RECORDS

Scope and Content

Comprising: log books 1928-1993, admission registers 1940-1994

Administrative / Biographical History

This school was opened in 1928 according to the first entry in the log book beginning in July 1928. A directory of 1938 lists it as Dunscroft School divided into three departments: Mr George Bickerdike head of the boys department, Miss Lewis head of the girls and Miss Durrans head of the infants. The first log book is that of the boys department which notes that the school opened with 213 boys aged between eight and fourteen years. Sometime after this the boys and girls departments merged to become Dunscroft Council School Junior Mixed Department. The admission register beginning in January 1940 records this as the name of the school so the change probably took place in 1939. Between 1945 and 1973 the school was known by the names Dunscroft Junior Mixed School and Dunscroft County Primary School. In 1973 the school became Dunscroft Abbey Church of England (Aided) Middle School for children aged between eight and thirteen years. The old school building underwent extensive modernisation and refurbishment as a result of a grant from the Travis Charity (see item 1/3). In 1992 due to falling numbers of admissions the school was earmarked for closure to take place in 1995. A serious fire which destroyed one wing of the school occurred in January 1994 (see items 5/1-2) and the school closed as planned in July 1995.
