Administrative / Biographical History

This church was built in 1914 to serve the newly-established mining community built to house workers at the Yorkshire Main colliery. The parish was originally a conventional district within the parish of (Old) Edlington, St Peter. Subsequently, the parishes of Edlington were combined with Warmsworth, St Peter.

In 1953, the arrangement was altered. Edlington became a separate united parish. In 1962, the parish church of Edlington, St Peter was declared redundant and St John the Baptist became the parish church.
