Scope and Content

SOS (Save Our Sands) campaign papers.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Save Our Sands campaign ran between 1969-1971 and began as a reaction to the decision made by the Ministry of Defence to relocate the Shoeburyness experimental gunnery range to Cefn Sidan [Pembrey beach, Carmarthenshire]. This move would have rendered 15,000 acres worth of land in Pembrey inaccessible to the public, including the eight miles of Cefn Sidan beach. Among those groups who came together to form the campaign were the Kidwelly Anti-Gunnery Range Committee, from whom this collection originates. The protesting took many forms from lying down in front of military vehicles, to a sponsored walk undertaken by school children to raise campaign funds, to guerrilla vandalism of construction equipment at night. The dispute eventually went to a public inquiry and the local community came together to fundraise for barristers to represent their side. The Ministry of Defence lost the case, and the Pembrey Country Park was established on the grounds where the gunnery range would have been.
