Harwood C. Laurence Papers

Scope and Content

The collection contains letters to Laurence from Augustus Daniel, Charles Aitken and Harold Isherwood Kay, and receipted bills from various London art dealers, including Arthur Tooth & Sons, Wildenstein & Co., and Barbizon House.

Administrative / Biographical History

Harwood C. Laurence (1869-1949), second son of Thomas Herbert Laurence and Victoria Agnes, née Cope, was a stockbroker and art collector, who lived in Hove, East Sussex. He was a member of the Walpole Society from 1920 to 1934. In 1949 he bequeathed several pictures to British museums and galleries through the National Art-Collections Fund. His collection of modern drawings and paintings was auctioned at Sotheby’s on 21 July 1949, lots 16-165.

The letters from Augustus Daniel formed part of Lot 3 at the Chiswick Auctions sale of autographs and memorabilia on 28 February 2019. Donated to the National Gallery Archive by Andy Moreton, April 2019.
