Letter from the surgeon John Hunter, London to Mr Goldwyer, also a surgeon, in Lyndhurst, Hampshire. In the letter Hunter offers Goldwyer advice on the treatment of one of his patients, namely Mrs Henderson who is suffering from a lump in the breast. Hunter agrees that relief without recourse to an operation is favourable and describes a method that he favours for reducing lumps in the breast. This involves the application of a lotion made up of two ounces of Goulard's extract and seven ounces each of camphorated and rectified spirits of wine. He then directs Goldwyer to take of a piece of old linen cloth that has been worn soft, fold it as many times as possible so that it is slightly broader than the tumour, and then soak the cloth in the lotion before applying to the lump and repreating regularly. If this method has no effect in a month or six weeks, Hunter then recommends the operation.
