Most of the correspondence in the archive relates to Hird's post-retirement life. Nearly all the letters are incoming, although there are a few copy letters. Mostly letters from family and friends, although there are a some earlier items which relate to Hird's work as a factory inspector. Hird does not appear to have ordered his correspondence in any particular way, although letterer received on his promotion to superintending inspector in 1935 and the award of the OBE in 1942 were kept separately. There are also some letters relating to Hird's submission of material for publication etc.
