Administrative / Biographical History

Amlwch Urban District Council (UDC), Anglesey, was established in 1894 under the provisions of the Local Government Act 1894, and covered the civil parish of Amlwch; previously there had been an Amlwch Burial Board. UDCs were bodies comprising councillors and a chairman, elected for three years. They originally took over responsibility for health and local sanitation from the local sanitary authorities and health boards, and their responsibilities could include sanitary services, sewerage, refuse collection, housing, streets, cemeteries, libraries, parks, controls on buildings such as petrol stations, and licensing of public entertainments. UDCs could be administered by a number of committees and by appointed officers including a Clerk, Treasurer, Medical Officer of Health, Surveyor and Sanitary Inspector. Amlwch UDC was abolished in 1974.
