UMIST Official Publications Collection

Scope and Content

The collection comprises the major official publications of Manchester College of Science and Technology and UMIST, including calendars, annual reports and accounts, staff and student guides, UGC reports and miscellaneous official publications. Collectively, these publications provide invaluable supporting information about the governance and organization of the University, its staff and students, and activities in teaching, learning, research, etc.

Administrative / Biographical History

The University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) was established in 1965 in succession to the Manchester College of Science and Technology (MCST). MCST had been set up in 1956 as a chartered body to conduct higher education courses and science and technology, following the withdrawal of Manchester City Council from the running of the Manchester Municipal College of Technology. UMIST and its predecessors had formed the Faculty of Technology of the Victoria University of Manchester since 1905, and the University remained ultimately responsible for many aspects of academic policy until 1994 when the Faculty was abolished after UMIST was granted a new charter, and became essentially independent from the University of Manchester. In 2004, UMIST and the Victoria University of Manchester merged to form The University of Manchester.
