RECORDS OF THE DONCASTER COUNTY BOROUGH CORONER

Scope and Content

Comprising: Coroner's daily record book 1936-1973; other records (but not inquest papers) 1951-1966, including treasure trove inquest 1966

Administrative / Biographical History

By the borough charter of 1467, the mayor was authorised to act as coroner for the borough. It is clear from the addresses of the deceased entered from March 1953 that the coroner dealt with cases beyond the boundaries of Doncaster County Borough, although the date from which this began cannot be ascertained from the records catalogued here. The records catalogued here were deposited by HM Coroner for the South Yorkshire (East District) in 1995. The jurisdiction of the Doncaster County Borough coroner was superseded by that of the coroner for the newly-created South Yorkshire (East District) from 1 April 1974.
