MESSAGE FOUND IN A BOTTLE IN BICESTER

Scope and Content

This single item was found in a glass bottle, which was itself found inside a brick in a house in North Street, Bicester. The contents of the note show that it was placed here in 1856 when the structure was built. There is no indication of exactly how the bottle (of which a few fragments survive) with its message was rediscovered.

The note, with bottle fragments, was deposited with the Oxfordshire Museum service in 1982, who in turn passed it on to the Archives, where it was assigned the accession number 2105.

Catalogued by Robin Darwall-Smith in March 1993.
