File relating to the initial development of a surgical nutrition and metabolic specialist unit at Hope Hospital. The Intestinal Failure unit officially opened in 1980, although services had been operated from 1977. The file includes a position paper, presumably by Irving, "Surgical Nutrition - the case for its recognition as a regional specialty", setting out the case for a unit, papers concerning the physical organisation of the IFU and a brochure Hope Hospital Intestinal Failure Unit [c.1993], which describes its work up to that date.
