DONCASTER, HOLMES CHURCH OF ENGLAND SCHOOL RECORDS

Scope and Content

Comprising: log books 1888-1930. Formerly Doncaster Holmes Girls and Infants School, and Doncaster Holmes Mixed and Infants School.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Holmes School was built in St Leger Place, Doncaster in 1888 with Boys, Girls and Infants Departments. The original building control plan is held by the Doncaster Archives under reference AB.Build 5/4314 (copy in Office Map Drawer) and also a further plan detailing proposed additions to the school in 1897 under reference AB.Build 5/1444. The first log book (SR19/1/1) was for the Mixed Dept until April 1920 when it became a Girls Dept. The boys transferred to the Parish Church School Boys Dept and the Parish Church School Girls Dept closed with the pupils transferring to the newly created Girls Dept of the Holmes School (see page 274). From Sept 1922 the Infants Dept merged with the Girls Dept (see page 288) and the Infants Dept log book was discontinued. It appears that the Holmes School closed in or about 1930: the last entry in the log book was made in July 1930 but does not make mention of any proposed closure. The school is listed in the Doncaster Yearbook and Street Directory for the year 1928 but does not appear in the 1932 edition, so it would appear that the school had closed by this date.
