Scope and Content

Correspondence mainly incoming letters to the honorary secretaries and the secretary (as well as some correspondence between them). Many of the letters were sent by College teachers or Council members, and concern mainly routine administrative matters.

Some of the more interesting items are: /17, 5 Dec 1859, Nodal's comments concerning the creation of the students committee; /22 Henry Oats to J G Greenwood, 6 February 1860, concerning College students establishing a rifle corps; /24 Nodal's letter 13 Feb [1860] concerning the creation of an essay and discussion society, /27 William Gaskell to Arthur Ransome, 14 February 1860 concerning his class, "The ballad poetry of Britain"; Gaskell to Greenwood "Friday night" [prob. May 1860] suggesting that the College acquire its own building and establish a guarantee fund to support it.

The letters have been arranged into chronological order, when identifiable; a few items which cannot be accurately dated have been placed at the end of the sequence.
