Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Annie Dick was born in Glasgow on 18 May 1910. Her father was Moncrieff Dick, a mining tool manufacturer. Before university Annie was a pupil at Hutcheson's Girls' Grammar School, Glasgow. She first matriculated at the University in September 1929 and studied French, Latin and History in session 1929-1930. In her second year, 1930-1931, she studied English and Moral Philosophy and in third year, 1931-1932, English and British History. In fourth year, 1932-1933, she continued with her English studies and in a fifth year, 1933-1934, specialised in English Language and Literature. She returned for a sixth year studying English and Anglo-Saxon and graduated in November 1935 with an MA (Hons) in English Language and Literature. While at University she received one of the John Clark (Mile-End) bursaries. Miss Dick won the following prizes: general excellence in Latin 1929-1930 (10th prize); 2nd prize in the French Ordinary class 1929-1930; 4th prize in English and 2nd class certificate in Moral Philosophy 1930-1931; 2nd class certificate in Higher Ordinary English, 2nd prize in British History (for Honours English) and 2nd prize in British History 1931-1932; 1st prize in English Language 1932-1933 and 2nd prize in the English Language Advanced class 1934-1935.
Miss Dick returned to Hutcheson's Girls' Grammar School as a teacher, then went to Westbourne School in Glasgow where she was Head of English. She retired c1975 and died in 2000.
