MANOR OF BISHOP'S HARWELL, BERKS

Scope and Content

The earliest information available about the manor lies in a charter granted to King Edgar to his theyn, Athelstan in 956. The manor was held by succeeding Bishops of Winchester from the period of the Restoration to the early 19th century when the Hopkins family of Tidmarsh Manor became the lessees. One of them, Robert Hopkins purchased the Bishop's Rights but died childless. His brother, John Hopkins, succeeded and when he died in 1877 the Manor descended to his son, Robert John Hopkins. The latter sold it to Messrs Paine and Brettel of Chertsey. Mr Paine died in 1917. See the Victoria County History of Berkshire vol 3 (page 486) for history and etching of the Manor.

In the catalogue, dimensions of property are given in acres, roods and perches, eg 2a 3r 12p
