A partnership by the name of Allen and Hickson appears in the Doncaster trade directories of 1921 and 1923 and an architectural practice of H A Hickson appears in the directories for 1934 and 1936. The contract book shows that in addition to architectural work for on domestic premises for private clients, the practice undertook major work for the brewery firm of Whitworth, Son and Nephew in the 1920s, designing the Ingram Arms, Hatfield, The Rockingham Arms, Doncaster, the Fairway Hotel, Balby, the Wheatsheaf Inn at Armthorpe and the Star Inn at Barnby Dun. Major contracts were also undertaken for Marks and Spencer (Baxtergate, Doncaster store) and Doncaster Corporation (extensions to Oswin Avenue School).

This is the only surviving record of Harry Armitage Hickson, architect, of 51, Hallgate Doncaster

Found on the premises during building alterations in December 1978, and deposited with Doncaster Archives by the incoming tenant

Related Material

Records (five volumes, 1929 to 1964) of an architectural practice of a Clifford Hickson and a Peter A Hickson of Huddersfield were found with this volume, and have been transferred to the Huddersfield office of the West Yorkshire Archive Service.
