The journal dates from January 1819 to March 1820, when Lieutenant H[enry] Smith, Royal Marines, was in the Mediterranean [on board HMS Rochfort, which he joined on 25 September 1818]. At the end of the volume is inserted a letter of 5 May 1850 from Lieut. Smith to his brother Charles Roach Smith (1806-1890), the antiquary, to whom this journal was presented on 6 August 1829 (front fly-leaf).
