OXFORD CITY LABOUR PARTY RECORDS

Scope and Content

In 1918 the national Labour Party allowed for the formation of local Labour Parties for each parliamentary constituency. Discussions to form an Oxford City Labour Party began in 1920 and had it's first Annual General Meeting in April 1922. Early records of the Oxford City Labour Party and the East and West Ward branches can be found as part of the Ruskin College collection at O45/9. In 1983 the electoral boundaries were changed and a new constituency Oxford West and Abingdon was formed, dividing the original area of Oxford covered by the City Labour Party. As a result the Oxford City Labour Party's name was changed to the Oxford East Constituency Labour Party and the Oxford District Labour Party was formed to represent Oxford as a whole.

The records consist of minutes, accounts of the Constituency and District Labour Parties as well material for the Local Ward Branches and election campaigns.

The records were desposited as Acc 4378 in August 1998 and catalogued by Alison Smith in June 2019.
