Scope and Content

This small subgroup contains material which has a provenance distinct from the rest of the archive, as it was all generated after the death of John Owens by his executors or trustees, principally by George Mattinson who was confidential clerk to Owens from 1843, after Owens's death becoming a clerk to his trustees and subsequently clerk and librarian of Owens College. It consists of: a bundle of accounts, some of which relate to the late company's profit and loss accounts, balance sheets and interest, and others to accounts between Hodgson and Robinson and the late company; papers relating to duties on goods consigned by the company to Oakeys and Robinson in New York; and papers relating to two bills of exchange held by the trustees. The final item is a letter dated 24 October 1853 from John Pender and Co. [merchants of Dale Street, Manchester] to Owen and Gill [Attorneys and Clerks to the Commissioners of Taxes] of Princess Street, Manchester, relating to the design of a building apparently adjacent to the Natural History Society building [in Peter Street]; it is unclear why this forms part of the archive.
