Letters from Smith and copies/drafts of Campion's responses concerning their discussion of the role of "sense data" and "instinct" in neural functions and consciousness. The views of the anatomists Hughling Jackson (1835-1911), Henry Head (1861-1940), W H S Rivers, (1864-1922) and C J Herrick (d.1961), and the philosopher, William James (1842-1911) are discussed in passing. Some of the correspondence has marginal comments added by Campion at a later date. These discussions appear to have influenced Campion's views set out in Elements in thought and emotion (1923).
