Scope and Content

A collection of deeds, rentals, 'particulars' and other documents relating to Lincolnshire. Over one hundred places are represented, with particularly good coverage of Bardney, Freiston, Goxhill, Orby, Tupholme, Uffington and Wragby. There are also tiny numbers of deeds relating to Derbyshire, Lancashire, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire and the East Riding of Yorkshire. The items date mainly from the late sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. They are arranged alphabetically by place-name, with miscellaneous material at the end of the series.

There are many rentals and other documents relating to Lincolnshire manors and properties in which George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham, his son George, 2nd Duke, members of the Manners family, Earls of Rutland, Philip, Earl of Pembroke, the banker Sir Robert Clayton MP and his partner alderman John Morris, among others, were interested. Several items concern the houses, sites and lands of dissolved Lincolnshire abbeys and priories, such as Bardney, Barlings, Heynings, Newstead, Spalding, Tupholme and Vaudey.
