Correspondence file

Scope and Content

A significant file of correspondence including letters to and from J E B Barton, who composed Narratives for the official history, includes his views on Bernard Fergusson's Wild green earth(1953-7); a number of letters from Maj-Gen Woodburn Kirby, author of the official histories 2 and 3. Some of these date from the period in which Tulloch was assisting Kirby, but others dating from the 1960s reveal the extent of their disagreements about Operation Thursday, and includes a highly critical letters of 7 Mar 1967 and 16 November 1967 attacking Wingate's attitude to medical services; Kirby also defends his differing views of Wingate. A copy of Tulloch's detailed response to Geoffrey Evans' questionnaire about Slim :"The temptation to become the accredited mouthpiece for Wingate's enemies was apparently too great for him. Morally therefore he is a weak man." A note from Peter Mead about how Tulloch might criticise the official histories.
