Biblical Translation transcribed by King Pomare of Tahiti

Transcription by Pomare II of Rev. Henry Nott's translation into Tahiti of part of Samuel, Book I.

Henry Nott (1774-1844) was originally a bricklayer, but he left his trade to become a Christian missionary to Tahiti, in the Society Islands of Polynesia. He was one of the first missionaries sent out by the newly organized London Missionary Society, and he arrived in Tahiti in 1797. He returned to England only twice during forty-seven years in the field. As part of his ministry he learned the native language and became the principal translator of the Bible into Tahitian.

Tu Tunuiea'aite-a-tua Pomare II, also known as Pomare II (1782-1821), was the king of Tahiti between 1782 and 1821. In 1808, Pomare, then in exile, converted to Christianity. When he resumed power and regained control in 1815, he adopted a law code drawn up by Nott that tried to put an end to old customs such as human sacrifice, infanticide and licentious behaviour. He was baptised on 16 May 1819 at the Royal Chapel, Papeete. He died at Motu Uta, Moorea, 7 December 1821.
