George Thompson's diaries

Scope and Content

5 bound volumes containing: George Thompson's social and working calendar, especially lectures and other engagements relating to abolitionism, free trade and India (notably the raja of Sattara); including GT's itinerary, his expenditure, references to his correspondence, his visit to India, public lectures and debates on many issues (including war, education, capital punishment, universal suffrage, military flogging, temperance, and Hindu religion), GT's election to parliament, and important events and dates (including parliamentary debates and votes); many blank spaces; there is a printed almanac, including details of public holidays, weights and measures, Post Office regulations, taxes and duties, banks, eclipses, tide tables, and so on at the front of each volume.

Arrangement

The volumes printed for 1857 and 1861 have been used by George Thompson as diaries for 1860 and 1862 respectively.
