CT 5000/ CT 5005 Scanner, Department of Diagnostic Radiology, University of Manchester Medical School

This section comprises material relating to the acquisition, installation and evaluation of the CT5000 whole body scanner, and the later upgraded version, the CT5005, in the Department of Diagnostic Radiology at the University of Manchester.

The EMI CT5000 scanner was installed in the University Department of Diagnostic Radiology in March 1976 at a cost of 250,000, provided by the regional health authority. Additional elements to the equipment, such as an independent viewing centre, were installed by October of the same year. The scanner was operated under Isherwood's direction. The CT5000 took twenty seconds to take one scan and took two hundred seconds to process a single slice. The whole body scanner could image parts of the body where conventional X-ray examination was previously extremely difficult and often inconclusive. It also enabled patients to be investigated as outpatients for conditions which previously involved admission to hospital for examination.
