Third Generation IGE CT Scanner (CT 8800), Department of Diagnostic Radiology, University of Manchester Medical School

Scope and Content

This section comprises material relating to the acquisition, installation and operation of the IGE CT 8800 scanner in the Department of Diagnostic Radiology at the University of Manchester.

Administrative / Biographical History

The IGE CT 8800 whole body scanner was unveiled in the Department of Diagnostic Radiology at the University of Manchester on 16 June, 1981. The scanner was developed and manufactured in the U.S. by International General Electric (IGE). It was ten times faster than the original scanner installed in 1976 and put the Department at the forefront of international research in the field. The acquisition of the scanner cost 500,000 and was the only one of its kind outside the U.S. The scanner's acquisition was the result of cooperation between the University and the regional health authority; the regional health authority provided the capital to purchase the machine while the university maintained house and staffed the project. The CT 8800 was considered the most suitable machine for the Department's research agenda which, at that time, was concerned with the non-oncological aspects of CT, i.e. those aspects concerning function and blood-flow studies, involving conventional body and brain scanning. The scanner allowed the Department to move into research areas involving functional imaging, particularly in connection with the heart, brain and assessment of tumour response to treatment.
