Third MRI Scanner, Philips 1.5 Tesla and the Ian Isherwood Magnetic Resonance Imaging Centre

Scope and Content

This section comprises material relating to the Philips 1.5 Tesla scanner in the Department of Diagnostic Radiology.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Philips 1.5 tesla ACS-NT Gyroscanner by Philips Medical Systems and the Ian Isherwood Magnetic Resonance Imaging Centre in the Department of Diagnostic Radiology were both opened by Ian Isherwood on 6th May 1997. The new centre involved a partnership arrangement which linked the University, Manchester Royal Infirmary and Philips Medical Systems and a 1.5 million investment in new scanning facilities. The opening of the new centre and scanner rendered Manchester a European Centre of Excellence in Brain Scanning, with the most sophisticated scanning facilities in the UK. The new MR scanner in the University was networked to a similar scanner based in the Department of Neuroradiology at Manchester Royal Infirmary, enabling scans made on one machine to be instantly available on the other. This was unique in the UK at that time. The new facilities allowed the study not only of body structure, but also body function, particularly of the brain. Philips Medical Systems designated the combined University and Royal Infirmary site as its European development site for Magnetic Resonance Imaging.
