Scope and Content

Church Slavonic manuscript.
Contents: Saints' and feast days of the Orthodox Russian calendar arranged in twelves within duodecafoil designs, enclosed in double circles (diam. 7.5 cm.). The text is in black and the circles done in red ink. Various other prayers. Watermarked paper, probably 18th century, but format too small to determine precisely. Small script, fairly regular Church Slavonic. 1v. Three concentric circles in red with 12 letters in a column ; 5r-20v. Thirty-one circles as described above ; 21r-29v. Various tables ; 30r-38v. Molitvy outrenniya ; 39r-40r. Molitva ot oskverneniya ; 41r. Note in 18th century Russian hand ; 41v. Note in different? Russian hand dated 1812 (Mention made of Napoleon in Moscow) ; 42r. Another note in same hand as 41r ; 43v. Note in Russian. End paste-down bears note in French: Ce manuscrit appartient à Mr J. Despax... and is dated Toulouse 13 août, 1882. An inscription at head of the paste-down reads: L.J. Symes. Ferguson acquired this MS on 13 October, 1896, which can be ascertained from the pencil note on front paste-down.
