Scope and Content

This is only a short commentary, the equivalent of 5 folios, held between two boards and the title on the front reads 'A written description of the drawing of three deformed skeletons and also of three distorted pelves belonging to the same subjects'.

It is not clear who the author is but the fifth folio is a letter addressed to Thomas Radford with a brief description of the cases in which he states that either Charles Bell or Mr Bell operated on one of the subjects and that the 'late Mr Allan lecturer on surgery here', was also involved. References to Mr Bell and Mr Allan imply that the author was based at Edinburgh University. He goes on to say that he is sending 'this by a Mr Hampton to Liverpool where it will be forwarded to you by the Railway. The drawings cost £1 11/4'. The three descriptions refer to a skeleton deformed by mollities ossium [osteomalacia], the skeleton of Christie Moore who died in childbirth, and a skeleton deformed by rickets.

This was formerly part of the Radford Library where it was allocated the reference number E 54 viz. their 1877 catalogue and looks to have originally been accompanied by the drawings referred to in the title. It has since been allocated the reference M7.7 W38 as part of alternative system and the whereabouts of the drawings is currently unknown. Some minor alterations have been made to the text by Radford.
