A catalogue of items in John Windsor's private library with their cost price or supposed value given down the right hand margin. On the whole the books are listed alphabetically by the author's surname or by the first word of the title, presumably where the author is not clearly defined. There are no additional bibliographic details given.
Judging by changes in the handwriting entries on the recto of each page represent the catalogue as originally drawn up and entries on the verso are later additions. There are also some additional alterations made to the text on the recto. An attempt has been made to give a running total of the cost price or supposed value of the books in pencil at the top and bottom of each page.
The majority of the books relate to a range of subjects associated with medicine such as botany, chemistry, surgery, anatomy, zoology, midwifery, ophthalmology etc. which reflect Windsor's working life but there can also be found texts on religion, geography, the classical world, literature, general and local history, and geology amongst others. Several of Windsor's manuscripts of student notes that also form part of this collection (MMM/4/1) can be found listed in this manuscript catalogue and Windsor was known to have donated a significant number of books to the Manchester Medical Society's Library and several of the medical books listed in this manuscript may correspond with those listed in the Society's 1890 library catalogue.
Folio 91 contains separate entries for a catalogue of John Windsor's Museum of Anatomy Natural and Morbid, which also list their estimated value. There are very few entries here but they also give the date on which the specimen was bought with the latest date being 1856, which has been used to give an approximation of the dates of creation of the manuscript. The rest of the volume constituting ff.92-135 is blank.
