Russia, 1916-1917

Scope and Content

Jefferson worked for the Anglo-Russian hospital from 1916 to 1917. He arrived in Russia in April 1916, where he worked at the hospital in Petrograd. War cases were transferred here after initial treatment and the hospital also saw the first casualties of the Kerensky Revolution of February 1917. From June 1916, Jefferson was responsible for a surgical unit in Lutsk on the Eastern Front. The Russians awarded him the Medal of the Order of St George for his work there. In September he returned to Petrograd, and Gertrude came out to Russia. They were together for the birth of their son Michael in December 1916. Jefferson returned to England in June 1917.

This series contains material relating to Jefferson's work with the Anglo-Russian Hospital, particularly his work at Lutsk. It also contains material relating to Michael Harmen's book, The Forgotten Hospital, Chichester 1982. The series includes Jefferson's passport and certificate of identity and photocopies of various related articles.
