Genealogical Notes and Pedigrees relating to Families in Cheshire and Neighbouring Counties

Scope and Content

A volume of genealogical notes and pedigrees relating to the Mainwaring family and other families in Cheshire and neighbouring counties. The volume is entitled: Extracts, Anecdotes & Notices concerning various Families and Places in Cheshire and the neighbouring Counties. There are two separate sequences of pagination within the volume - pp. 1-89 and pp. 1-102 - with an overlap between them. Thus p. 85 in the first sequence is also p. 1 in the second: p. 85/1, p. 86/2, p. 87/3, p. 88/4, p. 89/5. For ease of reference, page numbers in the second sequence have been converted to Roman numerals in the description below.

The volume contains:

  • Extracts from a Folio Manuscript Volume belonging to the Manwarings of Peovre and which is entitled, Copies of several Records and Deeds, etc. (pp. 1-31);
  • the genealogy of the Mainwarings of Peover from the Conquest, emblazoned with numerous coats of arms (pp. 32-83);
  • the genealogy of the Arderne family of Aldford and Alderley, and genealogical notes and pedigrees, with emblazoned coats of arms, for many other families including Stanley of Alderley, Gerard, Grosvenor, Fallows of Heawood, Latham of Latham, Alfreton, Dutton, Trafford of Trafford and Legh of Adlington (pp. 84-cii).
Page xxxv is headed Extracts from a Booke of sundrye and divers Noats of Evidences of times and Witnesses of Cheshire, Lancashire, Wales etc. collected and written by Thomas Chaloner student of the Lawe of Arms and Armory of Bridge St. Chester A.D. 1592, out of the Library of the late Dr Cooper of Chester. Other sources include Sir Peter Leicester's Genealogies M.M.S. (p. 12), and Watson Memoirs (p. xc). On the flyleaf is written John Thomas Stanley, Alderley Park, 1799. Old number, 12.
